Decorated Gourd Vessel with Animal Motifs, 20th century

Out of stock

A large decorated gourd vessel, likely made by a Kamba artist in Kenya during the late 20th century. Stylistically comparable to documented Kamba decorated gourds from the 1970s and later. The rounded form is covered with finely worked geometric bands and panels depicting various animals, including elephants, with the darkened incised decoration creating a strong graphic contrast against the natural gourd surface.

Comparable Kamba gourds from the coastal region of Kenya combine geometric ornament with images of wild animals and were made as functional vessels as well as decorative objects. The upper edge of this example is finished with fibre lacing.

Measures approximately 9 inches in diameter and 7.25 inches high. Very good vintage condition with no splitting.
