Inuit Soapstone Carving – Woman with Fish, Canada c. 1972

This Canadian soapstone carving from 1972 shows a seated woman holding a fish, with additional fish in a bowl at her feet. The piece is marked “A ©1972 CANADA” on the back and is unsigned.

Carved from soapstone with a smooth surface and visible tool work, the sculpture measures 5 inches high and 6 inches wide. It has an aged patina and noticeable chips on the base, knee, and top of hood – shown in the photos. Surface wear is consistent with age. These imperfections do not detract from the overall form or presence of the piece. Price reflects condition.

These types of carvings were widely distributed in the 1970s through Canadian retailers and gift shops, including the Hudson’s Bay Company. It’s a solid example of commercial Inuit-style carving from that era.
